New since 2019 is our second site, HGC Shepherds Barn, which is nestled at the foot of the South downs in a remote location on Firle estate in East Sussex. Previously an old Threshing barn, Shepherds barn will be the bricks & mortar of Hunter Gather Cook and house most of the company’s day to day operations whilst the Treehouse remains our forest site.
Shepherds barn will host some of our existing courses such as Deer in a Day, as well as many new courses, events, long table seasonal banquets, our guest chef series as well as being available for private hire.
Originally constructed in the 1800’s, we’ve taken great care to breathe new life into this wonderful agricultural structure by designing a freestanding kitchen which draws its inspiration from the original HGC Treehouse and the company Land Rover Defender. Outside the large walled garden has been landscaped to facilitate a series of raised beds that will provide the barn with all its not so wild ingredients, a fully furnished fire pit area including smokers and clay ovens and outdoor dining space. Both the indoor and outdoor kitchens are ‘analogue’ only: we only cook on fire at HGC and Shepherds barn will continue to honour our tradition of only cooking with live fire.
Our Coastal foraging courses, Wild cocktail courses, fermentation and charcuterie workshops, Whole animal cookery courses, ‘Sunday Lunches’ and forge cookery courses in conjuction with blacksmith Alex Pole will be released shortly. We will also be releasing a series of monthly seasonal banquets using the finest locally sourced wild ingredients and game available at the time and all of it cooked over fire.
